- To archive data for an unlimited retention period.
arkc
- The Arkeia Command Line Interface (CLI).
arkeiad
- arkeiad is the Arkeia daemon listing on a port, 617 by default.
arkeiasb
- Is a script that starts Arkeia Server Backup JAVA GUI.
arkrstdb
- A utility program to manually recover an Arkeia index by extracting
- the index from tape media.
Autoloader
- Small tape library unit, typically with a single tape drive and less than 10 slots.
Backup Server
- A machine that acts as the Main Media server for all remote (SAN and RDM) media servers
- that hosts the catalog index, configuration (savepack, drivepack, etc..) and backup policies.
Client Machine (backup)
- A networked computer that is backed up or restored by the backup server
Control Device
- Device file that connects operating system to a robotic handler of the library unit
daemon
- Server processes in UNIX that run in the background until needed by the system.
Differential Backup
- It is a backup type that retrieves new or modified files from a client machine
- since the last total backup.
Tape Drive
- Actual tape drive, or tape drive component of a library unit.
Drivepack
- One or several tape drives to be used by a specific Arkeia backup.
File Library
- Configuration used to backup files to a disk drive instead of a real tape.
Flow
- An individual stream of data that is sent by client machine to the backup server.
GUI
- Graphical User interface
Incremental backup
- A backup type that retrieves new or modified files from a client machine
since the last backup job.
inode
- A special data structure on a disk that maintains the attributes and location of files on the disk (on UNIX systems)
Interactive Backup
- A non-scheduled backup that is launched manually.
I/O port
- Allows to load or unload tapes from the library without taking it offline.
JUI
- Java User Interface
Library
- A multi-tape storage device that loads and unloads the tape drive automatically.
- The tape drive and slots capacity varies by model.
LUN
- Logical Unit Number, allows multiple devices to share one SCSI ID.
Media Server
- A machine that has access to a tape drive or library directly connection of via SAN.
Multiflow
- Arkeia's ability to correctly manage several data flows at the same time from the same Arkeia client.
Periodic Backup
- A scheduled unattended backup.
Periodicity
- How often a particular backup is scheduled (Daily, weekly, etc).
Plug-in
- An add-on software module that conforms to Arkeia standard.
Random mode
- Setting on tape library unit allowing the software to manage the library.
RDM Media Server
- An RDM (Remote Drive Management) is a media server with a directly attached
- tape drive or library/autoloader.
readArkeia
- A utility program used to restore data directly from a data tape.
Recycle
- To remove all database references to tape prior to overwriting the data on the tape.
Rewind Device
- Device file that connects the operating system to the tape drive.
Robot
- The "arm" mechanism that moves tapes between the drive and the library slots.
Robotic Handler
- The cartridge handling mechanism that moves tapes between the tape drive and the library slots.
rpm
- Redhat Package Manager, Linux utility used to install / uninstall software.
SAN Media Server
- A Media Server connected to the SAN that has access to a SAN attached tape drive or library/autoloader.
Savepack
- The designated files to be backed up by a specific Arkeia backup job.
Scratch Pool
- A reserve pool, used when the selected pool is empty or no tapes available.
SCSI
- High speed interface standard for disks, tape drives and other peripherals.
Slot
- Location of an individual tapes within a library.
Storage Node
- A Storage Node is a Media Server with backup capability.
arkdetect
- Utility used to inventory a library or load and unload tapes.
Tape Drive
- A standalone tape drive or a component of a library unit.
Tape pool
- Tape's container defining a group of tapes to be used by an interactive or a scheduled backup job.
tar.gz
- A Tape ARchive file (tar) that has been compressed (using gzip)
Validity
- The period of time tape indexes are maintained in the Arkeia database
- (Also referred to as retention period)
Voltag
- Bar code (tape label) information assigned to tapes, either manually or automatically.
- The library unit must have a barcode reader to be able to use voltags
xarkeia
- The binary that starts the Arkeia Network Backup GUI on Unix/Linux platforms
